Does TraceLogic work offline?

What works without internet, what needs connectivity.

Yes — and offline-first is the defining design choice of the entire platform. We built TraceLogic for engineers in environments where signal is unreliable or non-existent: offshore platforms, underground ducts, hillside cabinets, data centres.

What works fully offline (mobile app)

  • Opening .SOR files — the parser runs locally, no upload needed
  • Trace viewer — events, summary, curve, manual interpretation
  • Guided diagnostic flow — all 25+ scenarios work without signal
  • Bi-directional splice loss calculator — entirely local
  • Smart flag engine — runs locally on opened traces
  • Reference library — full-text searchable offline
  • Learning modules and quizzes — full content bundled with app
  • PDF report generation — generates locally, save to Files or email later
  • Previously parsed traces and past diagnostic sessions — all stored locally

In short: every core engineering task an engineer needs in the field works without an internet connection.

What needs internet

  • First-time account creation and login — cached after first auth
  • Subscription verification — checked once, cached with 30-day grace period
  • AI natural-language diagnostic queries — uses Claude API when online
  • Pulling project assignments + team data — synced when you next come online
  • Cloud sync of trace history — uploads in the background when connectivity returns
  • Content updates — improvements to the reference library and diagnostic tree

How it works under the hood

The mobile app uses SQLite as the single source of truth on your device. The cloud is an enhancement layer, not a dependency. When you sign in for the first time, your credentials are cached. After that, you can stay offline indefinitely — the app will keep working.

When you do get back online, the app syncs your queued uploads in the background and pulls down any new project assignments. You don't have to manage any of this manually.

What this means for fieldwork

You can fly out to an offshore platform, work for a week with zero signal, then sync everything in one shot when you're back on the supply boat with mobile data. No data loss, no manual exports, no spreadsheet transfers.
